A pop-up theatre is running at Victoria Park, screening children’s movies from the late-1990s like The Lion King, with a special outdoor screening on New Year’s Eve.
Daylesford Cinema president Gina Lyons said volunteers had been concerned the closure of the cinema would leave local children without traditional school holiday movies.
“We had searched high and low for a central venue that could not only house a fully operational cinema, but also be freely available to us for the whole of January and beyond,” she said.
The Rex closed to the public in October for construction of the Hepburn Hub, forcing the volunteer-run community cinema to shut its doors for their busiest school holiday period.
Ms Lyons said Victoria Park was an almost-perfect venue for the pop-up cinema, with required facilities, space and parking.
The Dressmaker will screen outdoors at 10pm on New Year’s Eve at the Victoria Park oval, followed by a countdown to New Year’s Day.
