Sergeant Mark Bell said it was an unusual number for a Thursday night, despite it being peak season for Christmas parties and end of year work break-ups.
“It’s the same old message but we’d prefer that everyone had a good time and safe time,” he said. “Look after your mates.”
Police are still investigating the nature of the assault, but two people suffered minor injuries after the unprovoked attack near the Bendigo Town Hall about 10pm.
Three men were arrested following the assault, but not before being capsicum-sprayed.
“We just want people to enjoy the time with their family and friends but be safe and treat other people with respect,” Sergeant Bell said.
“We understand everyone wants to have a good time but we have zero tolerance for assault and poor behaviour.”
The men will be charged on summons.
