An open invitation has been extended to all in the area to come along to the RSL hall from 10am for a free festive lunch.
Community group Heathcote Foodshare, which formed this year, is organising the lunch and chief executive Robert Peachey said the idea for the event came about after conversations earlier in November.
“We found we started to talk to people and ask, ‘What are you going to do for Christmas?’,” he said.
“We got a huge amount of people who were doing nothing. We don’t want anybody doing nothing on Christmas Day – it’s very un-Australian.”
On the day there will be a barbecue lunch, with prizes and a raffle donated by local businesses.
The hall, which has been provided by the RSL and City of Greater Bendigo, is air-conditioned and will ensure the event goes ahead no matter the weather.
“We’ve had huge support from everyone – it’s been fantastic, a good community effort,” Mr Peachey said.
“Everyone who wants to turn up on the day can.”
Heathcote Foodshare will continue to operate its free cafe and meals throughout the holiday period.
