Northern Rivers suffered their first defeat of the Dowling Shield under-16 cricket competition on Tuesday.

After winning their first three matches of the carnival, Northern Rivers lost by three wickets to Mallee Murray at Harry Trott Oval on Tuesday.

Northern Rivers' batting proved to be their downfall, with the home side bundled out for 131 in 40 overs.

Shepparton's Izac Artavilla top scored with 27, while Kangaroo Flat's Ryan O'Keefe made 24 off 42 balls.

Golden Square's Braydon Vaz made 18 and Strathfieldsaye's Abe Sheahan added 18.

In reply, Mallee Murray looked set to cruise to victory before a middle-order collapse gave Northern Rivers a sniff.

Mallee Murray lost 3-3 to fall from 4-121 to 7-124 before their tailenders steadied the ship to guide the visitors home.

Sandhurst's Kayde Howard was the pick of the bowlers for Northern Rivers, taking 2-24 off 10 overs.

In Tuesday's other match in Bendigo, the Western Waves (2-122) proved too good for North East Country (121).

In Wednesday's play, Northern Rivers play North East Country at Kangaroo Flat and Western Waves tackle Mallee Murray at the QEO.
