About ten Lifeline Central Victoria and Mallee volunteers are giving up their time on December 25 in what can be a stressful time for some.

Lifeline Central Victoria and Mallee chief executive Leo Schultz said there was an increase in calls over the holiday period with issues such as family estrangement, addiction and financial difficulties coming to light.

“We’re very fortunate to have many volunteers who are giving up their time just so people are here to ensure phone calls are answered over what is a particularly hard period,” he said.

The national charity is preparing to answer about 40,000 calls for help in Australia over the next two weeks and is encouraging people to donate to “give the gift of hope”.

Lifeline Australia chief executive Bob Gilkes said a small donation would help the organisation make it so no Australian in crisis or thinking about suicide had to be alone.

“While many people look forward to celebrating this time of year, it can be a stressful period for many due to relationship difficulties, financial pressures and excessive alcohol consumption,” he said.

“So, we’re asking people to be mindful of stress and loneliness in the community this Christmas – not just on Christmas Day, but in the days and weeks that follow.”

A call with one of Lifeline’s crisis supporters can be funded for as little as $26.

“With Australians due to spend $11 billion on Christmas presents in 2017, this is one gift that can truly have a profound impact on friends, loved ones and whole communities,” Mr Gilkes said.

Mr Schultz urged anyone having a tough time to reach out.

”If you have thoughts of suicide or are in particular crisis, give lifeline a call on 13 11 14,” he said. “You don’t have to do it alone.”

He also called on the community to recognise others may be suffering and to look out for them.

“Reach out to friends, family and neighbours and make sure they’re doing OK,” he said.
