UPDATE 3.30pm: A severe weather warning for damaging winds has been issued for parts of central Victoria.
Areas to the south of Bendigo, such as Kyneton and Daylesford, are being warned to prepare for damaging winds averaging 50 to 60km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100km/h possible about elevated areas.
The winds are expected to hit the western half of Victoria early tomorrow morning and ease by the afternoon.
The Bureau of Meteorology is also warning of hot to very hot conditions across Victoria tomorrow, leading to a day of high fire risk.
Total fire bans have been issued for the northern country, which includes Bendigo, the Mallee and the Wimmera, with a severe fire danger rating for the first two forecast districts.
EARLIER: The hot weather will continue into Tuesday, but showers and potentially severe storms could be on the way.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Stephen King said a cool change would start developing in the far west on Tuesday morning.
“That’ll start triggering off some showers and thunderstorms, sort of late morning into the early afternoon, and then they’ll make their way east, getting to… central and eastern parts by the afternoon,” Mr King said.
“Those thunderstorms may become severe, with the potential for some damaging wind, large hail and heavy rainfall.”
On Tuesday, Bendigo is expected to reach 36 degrees, Echuca 39, Redesdale 36, Maryborough 36, Castlemaine 34, and Kyneton 34.
But on Wednesday, Bendigo has a forecast high of 27 degrees.
An early weather forecast for Christmas Day will be available on Tuesday.
