BENDIGO University’s Andy Buchanan and South Bendigo’s Teleah Hayes broke Athletics Bendigo residential records as they raced the open 10,000m at Thursday night’s Zatopek Classic on Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium track.

Buchanan clocked a time of 29:08.89 as he raced to seventh place in an event that doubled as the Australian 10,000m championship.
The Strathdale-based athlete broke his previous residential record of 29:17.03 set at Geelong’s Landy Field almost a year ago.
The Zatopek 10 was won by Tasmania’s Stewart McSweyn, 28:37.28, from the 2016 champion Patrick Tiernan from Queensland in 28:38.94.
A superb season for Hayes kept on rolling as she achieved a time of 34:55.35 to be 15th in the women’s 10,000m.
Hayes beat the Bendigo residential record of 35:05.61 set by South Bendigo clubmate Clare McKechnie on December 14, 2002 at Melbourne’s Olympic Park.
Winner of Thursday’s race was Celia Sullohern from New South Wales in 32:31.22 as South Australia’s Jessica Trengove fought on to be runner-up in 32:35.06.
South Bendigo clubmates Taryn Furletti and Yazmin Hayes contested the under-20 3000m at Thursday night’s meet.
Just days after starring at the Australian All Schools championships in Adelaide, Furletti was seventh in her Zatopek 10 hit-out in a time of 10:05.35.
Hayes achieved a time of 10:37.19 and was 12th across the line.
Racing for Diamond Valley, Sophie Taylor was firth in the women’s 100 yard final in a time of 11.49.
Holder of Bendigo residential and centre records across many age groups for 100m and 200m, Taylor starred for Eaglehawk for many summers.
The Zatopek Classic honours Czech legend Emil Zatopek, gold medallist in the 5000m, 10,000m and marathon at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki.
