Huntly CFA captain Tony Jackson said curtains on the floor in the kitchen of the house had been set on fire, apparently deliberately.
Huntly and Bendigo CFA crews extinguished the fire within about five minutes.
Mr Jackson said there was some damage to the floor.
Witnesses reported seeing up to six teenagers running away from the area.
The fire is being treated as suspicious.
Any witnesses are asked to contact Bendigo police on 5448 1300.
EARLIER: Emergency crews are responding to a fire in Epsom.
Four CFA units are attending the fire which started in a building on the corner of Tobin Crescent and Station Street.
The house has windows boarded up and appears vacant.
