Senior Sergeant Ian Brooks said the girl had quite severe injuries, including broken bones, and was flown to The Royal Children’s Hospital on Friday night, where she remained in a serious but stable condition.
The girl was riding on a motorbike on Bracewell Street about 8pm when the crash happened.
Police said it appeared a 41-year-old male driver of an Isuzu ute was either overtaking or veered onto the wrong side of the road, and collided with the oncoming motorbike head-on.
Senior Sergeant Brooks said the cause of the crash remained under investigation.
“[The girl] was wearing all the correct safety gear, which is probably why her injuries weren’t worse,” he said.
Paramedics also treated a second patient at the scene – a man in his 20s.
A spokesperson for Ambulance Victoria said he was taken to Bendigo hospital in a serious condition with lacerations, abrasions and bruising.
Senior Sergeant Brooks urged all motorists to pay attention while on the road.
“People have got to understand when you’re driving a car, you’re responsible,” he said.
“Cars are very unforgiving, especially when they collide with a pedestrian or cyclist.”
More than 230 people have lost their lives on Victorian roads this year, including a cyclist who was killed in Macedon on Sunday.
