Kangaroo Fire Brigade First Lieutenant Brendan Brown said emergency services were called after smoke was sighted issuing from the Bendigo-bound vehicle about 12.30am.
He believed the source of the smoke was a mechanical fault.
No fire was detected.
Nobody was injured, and Mr Brown said the damage to the vehicle was minor.
One lane of traffic from Big Hill towards Bendigo, near Lansell Square shopping centre, was shut while emergency services attended.
Mr Brown said the driver was alerted to the issue by another road user.
He said the driver was very fortunate, and deemed it a ‘good outcome’.
“It could have been worse,” he said.
