Meredith Peace, president of the Australian Education Union in Victoria, said the state government wanted to increase annual class-facing hours by almost 20 per cent.
“TAFE teachers are already stretched, working on average 6.8 hours of overtime per week with unsustainable levels of administration and compliance work,” Ms Peace said.
“This work stress means 75 per cent of TAFE teachers have considered walking away from their job.”
Ms Peace said teachers were already working excessive overtime, affecting their ability to prepare lessons for students.
Victorian TAFE teachers were also paid $10,000 less than their counterparts in New South Wales, she said.
