The Kangaroo Flat Community Enterprise held a fundraising drive on Friday during which the Kangaroo Flat Primary School donated $5000, the Kangaroo Flat Swimming Club donated $5000 and the Kangaroo Flat Rotary Club donated $2000.
Tin rattling also brought in $250.
The donations took the total to $540,000.
Kangaroo Flat Community Enterprise chairman Jack Lyons said he was confident they would reach the $1 million goal before the opening of the aquatic centre, expected for June-July next year.
“We had four years to raise the funds one year ago, and we’re trying to reach the target before it opens,” he said.
“We’re very positive that we’ll be able to achieve that.
“There’s a lot of interest in the community to try to get to the target.”
The roof was recently added to the aquatic centre – to be known as the Gurri Wanyarra Wellbeing Centre – and all of the concrete has been poured. Tiling will be the next works to begin.
The cost of the aquatic centre was estimated to be $31 million and includes $15 million from the state government, $10.1 million from the City of Greater Bendigo and $4.9 million from the federal government.
