The sticky and sleepless nights have been preceded by days of soaring temperatures, with Tuesday and Wednesday hitting 34 and 33 degrees.

The warm conditions could last for up to 13 nights, the weather bureau predicts.

The last recorded string of similar November nights was in 2009, when the mercury stayed above 15 degrees for five consecutive evenings.

The rest of the week will stay scorching with Thursday and Friday both forecast to reach 33 degrees.

It will set Melbourne up to record its first seven-day stretch of temperatures higher than 28 degrees in November in 155 years.

Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott said the first run of hot days after winter could be challenging to adjust to.

"People are probably pretty uncomfortable. To think only a few weeks ago it was relatively cold - 16 degrees on Melbourne Cup day," she said.

"It's a lot of chop and change and obviously a big change within a week or two.

"And unfortunately it is going to hang around for a little bit."

The heat is indeed settling in for the long haul.

Temperatures will only drop slightly over the weekend - 30 and 26 on Saturday and Sunday respectively - and there will be cloud cover, humidity and a 60 per cent chance of thunderstorms.

Monday is forecast to be a positively mild 22 degrees but that won't break the hot spell as by Wednesday the mercury will have climbed back up to 32 degrees.

And then after all that, it will actually be summer.
