UPDATE 12pm: Police have praised the efforts of bystanders and witnesses to this morning’s collisions.
Detective Sergeant Steve Rainey said due to immediate action by police, arrests were made without incident, but they appreciated the support from the public.
“The response we’ve had from the public today has been immense starting back from the people in the local Axedale area that have been able to provide us with information,” he said at the scene of the Kangaroo Flat crash.
“And again the number of people here that have assisted those occupants that were involved in the collision and provided information to police and looked after their fellow community has been outstanding.”
Police believe the four firearms – a mixture of shotguns and .22s – recovered in May Street were stolen from an Axedale shed early this morning.
The property on the Kimbolton-Axedale Road was burgled between 5am and 5.30am, where offenders also stole a white utility.
The vehicle was later found by a resident crashed into a tree on the nearby Axedale Quarry Road.
Detective Sergeant Rainey said investigations were ongoing into the single-vehicle crash, but it appeared driver error, high speed and inexperience may have led to the crash.
He said investigations were ongoing into the cause of the second collision in Kangaroo Flat, which involved three cars.
Initially the canine unit was on standby to search for the burglars at Axedale but was later called off. It was then requested again after reports of people fleeing the Kangaroo Flat crash with firearms, but was not needed.
A man and a woman, both in their 20s and known to police, have been arrested and are assisting police with ongoing investigations.
Anyone with information about either collision, the burglary or the blue Mitsubishi Lancer is urged to contact Bendigo police on 5448 1300, Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
