Police were called to the scene on the McIvor Highway just before 6pm after the driver of the Holden – a hire car – veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided with an oncoming truck near Homebush Drive.
Acting Sergeant Lincoln Owens said the car then veered into a tree on the opposite side of the road.
The driver, a man in his 50s from England, was taken by ambulance to Bendigo Health with a laceration to his head.
A passing nurse pulled over and provided first aid at the scene before the ambulance could arrive.
The car-carrying truck came to a stop about 100 metres from the scene and only sustained minor damage.
Acting Sergeant Owens said fatigue was a possible factor in the crash.
Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
Traffic was not restricted on the McIvor Highway while emergency services cleared the scene.
