ONE of the youngest runners in the field, Jackson Eadon raced to an impressive victory in the Ern Hammer Memorial 3000m at the Flack Advisory Bendigo Region athletics meet on Saturday.

Eadon, 13, started off a mark of 2.55 minutes in the Ben Stolz Myotherapy-sponsored classic in Flora Hill.
The rising star from Bendigo Harriers completed the race in 10:30.73 ahead of clubmate Rossi Evans, 10:29.44 off 3.00m, and South Bendigo’s Peter Curtis, 11:18.48 off 2.15.
Fastest time honours went to South Bendigo’s young guns Archie Reid, 9:09.47 off 4.30; and Taryn Furletti, 10:13.04 from the 3.30 mark.
There were many highlights in the fifth round of Athletics Victoria shield action at the Latrobe University Bendigo athletics complex.
South Bendigo’s Teleah Hayes broke another Centre record as she completed the first of the 1500m heats in 4:29.42.
Hayes broke the open mark as clubmate Jack Popplestone won the 1500m duel in 4:28.55.
John Justice from South Bendigo broke the Centre’s record for the 80-plus class as he ran the 1500m in 6:44.51.
At pole vault, Geoff Shaw from Bendigo Harriers soared to a Centre record-breaking leap of three metres.
At 69-years-young, Shaw has broken several records for the 60-plus division in this and previous seasons.
Eaglehawk dominated the sprints action as Asher Jones won the first of the men’s 100m heats in 11.33.
It was a Hawks’ trifecta in the first of the women’s 100m contests as Laura Kadri, 12.91, won a great battle from Niah Langtree, 12.96, and Carlie Whitford, 13.00.
The Borough starred in the 4 x 100m relay as Jones teamed with Eaglehawk clubmates Lachlan Start, Lewis Merriman and Jamie Harrison to win in 46.18 seconds.
Kyle Murphy from Bendigo Harriers leapt to a mark of 6.83m to win the long jump, and Carlie Whitford hit 5.25m in the women’s long jump event.
Javelin was closely-fought as University’s Anthony Messerle, 43.86m, won from Start, 42.46m, and Bendigo Harriers’ Bailey Cooper, 41.73m.
South Bendigo’s Emma Berg achieved the javelin and shot put double once again.
Berg’s best were 34.93m at javelin and 13.36m at shot put.
Jones racked up another victory as he put the shot to a mark of 10.80m.
Athletics action will be at LUBAC in Retreat Road from 1.30pm next Sunday when round six in Athletics Victoria Shield is run. On-line entries via the Flack Advisory Athletics Bendigo website close at 9pm on Friday.
