The star midfielder announced in June this year that he was suffering from a displaced vertebral disc in his upper spine and that his playing future was in grave doubt.
Greer missed the remainder of the BFNL season before a series of visits to doctors in the past two months gave him hope that he could return to action next year.
“At this stage I can start training and take things slowly with a view to getting back at some stage next year,’’ an elated Greer said at the Roos’ first training pre-season training session on Monday night.
“It’s unreal news. It wasn’t looking good there early on, but I think I’m going to be right to go. I’m still on cloud nine to be honest… it’s a big relief.
“I’ll slowly build things up and hopefully play in a practice match. I’ll see how I pull up from the practice match and make a decision from there.”
Greer joined in fitness drills and ball work at training on Monday night, but won’t start contact work until later in the pre-season.
The Roos had good numbers at their first official training session, with co-coach Shawn Filo putting the group through its paces.
“Obviously our season this year finished early, so the boys are back ready to go,’’ Greer said.
“The boys have already done some work and they’re keen to get stuck back into it.
“We should be really fit for next year.”
The Roos blooded several talented teenagers in 2017 and are now looking for some quality experienced players to compliment their youth.
“We should have a strong list of about 50 players to choose from for next year,’’ Greer said.
“We’re at the stage where we’re confident that we’ll have a few experienced senior players to add to the group in the next few weeks which is exciting.”
