The 21-year-old followed his first round 66 with a five-under par 67 in Friday’s second round to be 11-under for the tournament.
American Kramer Hicock and Australian trio Daniel Nisbet, Ben Eccles and Jarryd Felton share the lead at 12-under.
Herbert shares fifth place with WA’s Jason Scrivener.
Fellow Bendigo professionals Andrew Martin and Kris Mueck made the cut for the weekend.
Martin shot a one-under par 71 in the second round to be in a tie for 32nd at five-under par.
Mueck looked in danger of missing the cut until he stormed home to sign for a one-under par 71. He’s two-under for the tournament and in a tie for 62nd.
