It was the first time the Aussies have won the World Cup.
After going through the preliminary rounds undefeated, Australia disposed of the United States in the gold medal game.
“This is the pinnacle for dart players in Australia,’’ an elated Thompson said.
“We don’t have the high-rating events that you get in Europe, so to go to Japan and beat everyone is big for Australian darts.
“It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.”
Thompson now turns his attention to the individual World Championships in England in January.
“To win that would be a dream for me,’’ Thompson said.
“That’s as big as it gets for me. There’s going to be a lot of good players there, but I’m confident I can play well.”
