The finals at Lord’s Raceway will be followed by the Ready 2 Race auction from 3pm.
All greyhounds involved in the series are bred in Victoria and aged between 16 and 28 months, meaning they are at or near the beginning of their racing careers.
One of the greyhounds at last year’s auction – Crook Me Kindly – was purchased by a group of first-time owners, the Peckerheads syndicate, for $3500.
With a win in the listed Northern Districts Cup (450m) in Shepparton earlier this month, Crook Me Kindly has already accumulated $32,525 in prizemoney for the Peckerheads – a group of nine former school mates from Catholic College in Wodonga.
The syndicate purchased Crook Me Kindly at last year’s Ready 2 Race auction in Bendigo with earnings raised through a punter’s club in 2015 and 2016.
“We were initially going to spend our winnings on a trip away together, but decided to do something more meaningful with our money,” syndicate manager Jordan Thorneycroft said.
“We considered a horse, but decided a greyhound would be a better option.
“We had picked out about five greyhounds who had broken 24 seconds that we planned to bid for, but those dogs sold for prices above our budget.”
So they settled on Crook Me Kindly, who in 25 starts has notched seven wins and six minor placings.
Meanwhile, Lord’s Raceway will hold a 12-race greyhound meeting on Friday, with the first at 2.52pm.
