The CFA puts in place the ban on days when fires are likely to spread rapidly and be difficult to control.
The decision means no fires can be lit or remain alight in the open air.
The Mallee region takes in the Buloke and Gannawarra shires, and towns including Charlton, Donald, Wycheproof and Birchip.
South of the Mallee, in Castlemaine, two burns planned for today are now cancelled because of weather conditions.
