The felling of the tree, which bordered the train line, did not disrupt any passenger services, a V/Line spokesperson confirmed.
EARLIER Firefighters are at the scene of a suspicious tree fire in central Bendigo.
Bendigo senior station officer Mark Nevill said the fire looked to have been started by “human activity of some kind”.
He said firefighters, in conjunction with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, would assess whether the tree, which borders the train line near Mundy Street, needed to be cut down.
Mr Nevill said the top part of the tree had fallen off previously, allowing flames to enter the main trunk of the gum tree.
Three CFA units and police attended the scene.
More to come.
