The festival of horseracing and fashion ends its run on Saturday at Flemington Racecourse with Stakes Day.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Michael Efron said racegoers could expect perfect weather at the event billed as 'family day'.

"Finally, we'll get nice weekend this weekend, with ideal conditions today and tomorrow," he said on Saturday.

"It's a partly cloudy start to the morning, but that cloud will tend to break up a bit more as we head into late morning and into the afternoon.

"I think we'll see a bit of a sea breeze develop around midday, and it will still be getting quite warm into the late afternoon, with a top of 28 degrees that will occur around 4-5pm today.

"So really, quite a pleasant day today for the Melbourne area."

The forecaster said Sunday would remain warm and dry with patches of early fog and low cloud clearing throughout the day and a top of 27 degrees.

And that warm, dry weather is set to continue until a cool change later in the week.

Despite possible showers and thunderstorms across the northern ranges and outer eastern suburbs, most of Melbourne would stay dry with tops of 29 and 32 degrees, respectively, for Monday and Tuesday, he said.

A sticky, humid night on Tuesday would be followed by a change late Wednesday which will see maximum temperatures drop into low 20s and high teens through to next weekend.

"It will be a little steamy and 28 on Wednesday up until that change," Mr Efron said.

Then the low pressure trough will be moving through in the evening or afternoon, which will bring some showers and thunderstorm activity."
