The new features at the Rileys Road level crossing are intended to improve train detection and motorists’ awareness of the crossing as they approach.
The upgrade works involved crews connecting electrical power at the crossing, completing engineering and signalling works, and installing level crossing equipment, which was then tested and commissioned.
The crossing was the site of a collision between a truck and a V/Line passenger train in December 2014.
Both occupants of the truck and a train passenger were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
An investigation found inattentive driving and roadside vegetation were factors in the incident.
The upgrade is part of a $50 million state government program to improve safety at 52 crossings and 25 pedestrian crossings.
The program is due for completion next year.
