Two men in a white ute attempted to wrench a ticket machine from its steel frame at the Gisborne railway station at 3.50am.
The machine was pulled from the frame but failed to detach from its footings. The thieves left the scene empty-handed.
At 4.30am, the same two men arrived at Riddells Creek railway station where they tried to wrench another vending machine free.
This time, they managed to steal the machine and loaded it onto the tray of their ute.
It was later found in Palmer Road, Sunbury, at 7am.
Police are continuing to investigate the crime. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
