LACHLAN Sharp’s superb Bendigo league season with Strathfieldsaye has caught the attention of Essendon.
Sharp – who this year added a premiership medal, Michelsen Medal, Ron Best Medal, AFL Victoria Country grand final medal and Strathfieldsaye best and fairest to his football CV – was invited to a testing session at Essendon last weekend.
“It was a fantastic experience to go down and have a bit of a go… I was the oldest there by a fair way,” Sharp, 26, said this week.
“We did the 20m sprint, the yo-yo endurance, agility test, vertical jump and some light skills and ball work at the end.
“It was run by one of their recruiting guys Rob Forster-Knight, and their VFL coach (Dan Jordan) was also there.
“I’ve never done anything like this before, so it was interesting to be part of.
“I tested the best I could have… I wasn’t the worst there by any stretch and wasn’t the best by any stretch either, probably mid-range.
“There were certainly some fit young kids there, but I didn’t feel out of place.”

Sharp says if a VFL opportunity is to come his way from the Bombers, he would consider taking the next step.
“To be honest, it’s not something I had thought about,” Sharp said.
“Because of my age, you would think it would be VFL if anything, but if nothing comes of it then I wouldn’t be too worried because at least I had a go.
“I’m not expecting anything to come of it, but if something does then it would be something I’d need to think about because you obviously want to play the best football you can while you can.
“It has all been a bit of a whirlwind, but if nothing happens then I’ll be at Strathfieldsaye again.”
Coming off a knee reconstruction last season, Sharp booted 142 goals for the Storm this year.
