The self-proclaimed oldest primary school in Bendigo will hold an open school event on Saturday to commemorate its achievement.
The school, established in 1867 by German settlers as a German common school, retains many of the original features, including parquetry flooring and slate blackboards.
Principal Mandy Costello said the open school, from 1-5pm, was accessible to everyone, including ‘Violetarians’, parents and children.
“It’s about celebrating the past and the strength of still being here,” she said.
“We are proud of our traditions and proud of our wonderful building.”
One of the building spires has been taken for refurbishment, with the help of the state government, Ms Costello said.
The medium-sized primary school, which has around 175 students, was growing slowly compared to some schools, but its location – in Ironbark – wasn’t a large growth area, she said.
