UPDATE 6.15pm: POLICE have been notified of a small grassfire at White Hills, which firefighters believe to be suspicious.
Units were called to the Napier Street address, near Weeroona College, about 5.30pm.
Bendigo Senior Station Officer Rob Puise said people participating in cricket training nearby helped extinguish the fire.
Their quick thinking ensured the fire was mostly out by the time units arrived.
The fire will be subject to investigation. It follows an out-of-control burn-off at Strathfieldsaye.
EARLIER: AN out-of-control burn-off at Strathfieldsaye has sparked a safety reminder.
Several firefighting units responded to the fire at a Tannery Lane property about 3.30pm on Wednesday.
The burn-off was left unattended.
Country Fire Authority rostered duty officer Trent McKinnon said the fire was extinguished within 20 minutes.
Though the fire danger period in Bendigo has yet to be declared, Mr McKinnon said the incident served as a reminder to act responsibly.
He reminded people not to leave their burn-offs unattended.
Mr McKinnon encouraged people to register their burn-offs with the CFA by calling 1800 668 511, so firefighters were aware of any planned burns and could respond appropriately.
He said people should be aware of their local municipality’s by-laws prior to conducting a burn-off, and monitor the weather conditions.
“If it’s a warm and windy day, consider whether or not it’s appropriate to burn-off,” he said.
The recorded temperature at Bendigo Airport about 3.30pm on Wednesday was almost 30 degrees.
The CFA has encouraged people to prepare for the fire season ahead.
More to come.
