Lake Elizabeth and Round Lake near Kerang are being carefully managed to provide good conditions and habitat for the small fish, of which there are only a few populations left in the Murray Darling Basin.
The North Central Catchment Management Authority is delivering water flows to provide just enough fresh water for growth of food plants for the fish.
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning is monitoring the impacts of the water flows, especially the numbers of zooplankton, the fish’s main food source.
The healthy wetland flows are also giving bird numbers a boost.
Goulburn Murray Water, the Victorian Environmental Water Holder and the Arthur Rylah Institute are also involved in the project.
