Kim and Jim Monro, owners of the Mandurang Post Office, arrived home about 3pm Monday afternoon to discover their dog Banjo was not at home.
When their son went to feed the poultry a few hours later, they discovered their 30-plus chickens, three Indian runner ducks and one of their turkeys were also missing.
There was much relief when Banjo returned home safe on Tuesday, having been taken to a White Hills veterinarian and later the RSPCA the night before, but the whereabouts of the birds remain a mystery.
Mrs Monro said it was rare for Banjo to wander, especially without their other dog.
He was taken once before, about five years ago, and was found at Goornong.
Banjo is well-known among Mandurang residents, as he likes to greet customers at the Post Office.
The poultry’s enclosure was opened onto an adjacent paddock, Mrs Monro said, but the chickens tended to stay within that area.
Mrs Monro said she was horrified at the prospect that someone might steal someone else’s pets, and in disbelief it could happen.
Police have been informed of the disappearances.
