Victorians are being encouraged to take to the water on Sunday and cast a line to celebrate fishing.
October 15 marks the national Gone Fishing Day when across Victoria, a recreational fishing licence is not needed to wet a line.
The event was created by the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation and encourages newcomers to fishing to have a try.
Victorian Fisheries Authority chief executive Travis Dowling said the event was a chance to escape day-to-day tasks, get in touch with nature and spend time with the people that matter.
Angling clubs, community groups, Landcare groups and schools have been encouraged to host their own events on the day and a list of event can be found at vfa.vic.gov.au/recreational-fishing/featured/gone-fishing-day.
Among the events is the Campaspe Carp Catch, organised by the North Central Catchment Management Authority, to be held at Kyneton, Rochester, Burnewang, Axedale, Strathallan and Echuca.
North Central CMA project manager Angela Gladman said the event was a fun way to highlight the scourge of the introduced species.
“Carp are the rabbits of our rivers,” she said. “They are a major component of the Murray-Darling Basin’s fish population and they cause significant damage to rivers, wetlands and the natural environment.”
