Halloween is still more than three weeks away but a newly installed artwork on View Street is already bringing a sense of the macabre to the Bendigo CBD.

Titled The Dead Are More Alive Than The Living, the larger-than-life likeness of a human skull is the latest addition to Bendigo Art Gallery’s public sculpture collection.
The five-tonne installation, which rests on a plinth reading “Keep on keeping on”, is the doing of Sydney sculptor Alex Seton.
It forms part of a series of works in which Seton immortalises everyday objects in stone, items that include a plastic garden chair.
The sculpture is now on show outside the gallery’s front entrance.
It’s not the only nod to the human head in central Victoria’s arts scene, either.
At the Art Gallery of Ballarat next week, an exhibition called Romancing the Skull will open.
A showcase of designs from costumier Edith Head (get it – head?) is also taking pride of place in the Bendigo gallery.
