DUSTY MARTIN WINS BROWNLOW MEDAL
NINE years after he was named the Bendigo Football League’s rising star in 2008, Dustin Martin has won the AFL’s Brownlow Medal.
Richmond superstar Martin had been the raging hot $1.05 favourite going into Monday night’s count and won with a record 36 votes.
The 26-year-old has become the first player drafted from the Bendigo Pioneers to win the Brownlow Medal. He was drafted to Richmond from the Pioneers with pick No.3 in 2009.
It was a big night in Castlemaine and Campbells Creek where Martin previously played before going on to become one of the AFL’s biggest names.
Martin first played junior football with Campbells Creek in the under-10s, while he got his first taste of senior football with Castlemaine as a 16-year-old in the Bendigo league in 2008 when he won the Rising Star Award.
Brownlow functions were held at Campbells Creek’s Five Flags Hotel where the “Dustin Martini” was a popular drink and at the Castlemaine Football-Netball Club social rooms at Camp Reserve where each vote he was awarded – particularly the threes – was met with a loud cheer.
Martin’s nan Lois Knight attended both functions and watched her grandson win the Brownlow Medal at the Castlemaine rooms, along with other members of his family, the Denahys.
Martin polled votes in 14 games, including 11 where he was awarded best-on-ground.
He had two patches where he polled three consecutive best on grounds.
Second was Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield, who polled 33 votes, but was ineligible.
As well as winning the Brownlow Medal, Martin also gets the chance to become a premiership player this Saturday when his Tigers take on Adelaide in the grand final at the MCG.
