Two young women believed to be in their teens have died and a man in his 60s is fighting for his life following a head-on crash near in east Gippsland on Sunday afternoon.

Witnesses told police a wagon heading south on the Omeo Highway hit a ute travelling north at about 4.55pm.
The driver of the wagon, believed to be a woman in her late teens, and her female passenger, also believed to be in her teens, died at the scene.
The driver of the ute, believed to be a man in his 60s, was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.
There are four bushfires burning in the vicinity of the crash as well as a severe weather warning for high winds, but it is not yet known if the conditions played a role in causing the crash.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash and urged witnesses or anyone with further information to contact them.
