Natives on show in Kangaroo Flat

WHEN it comes to tending for native Australian plants, a few weeks can make the world of difference.

That was the case for the 2017 Bendigo Australian Flower Show, held at Kangaroo Flat Primary School on the weekend.

The show was pushed back three weeks, which allowed for a whole new range of native species to be on show – including more Grevilleas and Eremophilas.

Bendigo Native Plant Group president Ian Evans said it was an opportunity for native-lovers to learn more about seasonal natives.

“We’ve been running this show for 30 years and the advances in native plant cultivation in that time have been incredible,” he said.

“Gone are the days when there were only a handful of specimens sold by nurseries.

“Today there is a vast range of species and cultivars and our aim is to expose more people to the variety of natives that will happily grow in our warm, dry climate and attract local birds to their garden.”

The event moved to the Kangaroo Flat Primary School hall to cater for growing interest.
