UPDATE 2.30pm: Police say a medical episode contributed to a crash on Eaglehawk Road that left a man seriously injured.
It is understood the 68-year-old driver has diabetes, and that was a factor in the crash.
Acting Senior Sergeant Mick McCrann, from Bendigo Highway Patrol, said it was important people kept hydrated in the impending hot weather, particularly if they had medical conditions like diabetes, because it was vital they were in the best possible physical health when behind the wheel.
UPDATE 9.15am: Witnesses have told police the car involved in a serious crash on Eaglehawk Road was travelling on the wrong side of the road when the incident occurred.
Leading Senior Constable Niall King said witnesses had indicated the car, which was travelling from Eaglehawk towards Bendigo, was speeding when it passed the Creeth Street intersection.
Leading Senior Constable King said from that point, the car was understood to have been on the wrong side of the road.
He said that as it approached the Marong Road intersection, it mounted the kerb and drove onto the footpath, passing in between the Salvation Army Store and a power pole before striking and knocking down another power pole.
The 68-year-old driver was trapped for more than an hour before being taken to hospital in a serious condition.
Leading Senior Constable King said it was lucky no one else was involved in the crash at that time of morning, and the two airbags in the vehicle helped avoid a fatality.
He said a passer-by had put out a fire under the bonnet before emergency services arrived.
Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash, including whether it was the result of the driver’s actions or a medical episode.
