THE cheers of almost 600 children were deafening as a Bendigo teacher had his first haircut in 25 years.
Jason Hague grinned as his friends, colleagues and pupils at Kennington Primary School got their first glimpses of his freshly shaven face and head.
The whole school turned out for the occasion.
Students Shay Wignall and Anna Winter had the honour of chopping off Mr Hague’s ponytails – an experience Shay said she enjoyed way too much.
“[It was] weird, but really fun,” she said.
The Bendigo SES unit controller and City of Greater Bendigo Brass Band member had been growing his beard and hair since university.
He decided to shave it off for two charities close to the school community’s heart – Motor Neurone Disease Australia and the Leukaemia Foundation.
Mr Hague said people’s generosity had far exceeded his expectations.
The campaign has raised about $3500, and counting.
Donations can be made online at and in person at the Kennington Primary School office.
Mr Hague extended “a very big thank-you” to all those who had supported the initiative.
“It’s cool – literally,” he said of his new look.
