The board of Haven; Home, Safe yesterday released a statement explaining its “unequivocal” support for same-sex marriage, saying they believed marriage equality was a basic human right for all.
“We recognise the right of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex clients, employees and members of our community, to live and work free of prejudice and discrimination,” the statement read.
“This includes the right to marry the partner of their choice.”
Board members decided to make their view public because of their service’s work with marginalised communities, which include LGBTI people.
“This is a difficult time for many people who may feel isolated or distressed,” chairwoman Sue Clarke said, before also explaining diversity was a strength of the Australian community.
“We want our LGTBQI community to know that Haven; Home, Safe stands with you at this time. Take care of yourselves”.
The organisation is also among 1600 not-for-profit organisations to pen an open letter in support of marriage equality in Australia.
Haven; Home, Safe also reminded those affected by the marriage debate to seek help by phoning queer counselling service QLife on 1800 184 527 or BeyondBlue on 1300 22 4636.
