MYSTERY surrounds the fate of one of Bendigo’s historic hotels, after it shut its doors.
A City Family Hotel employee said the establishment closed on August 31, but was unable to comment further.
“The City Family Hotel is closed until further notice,” signs stated.
Though the hotel is closed, the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation spokesperson said the venue had a current operator’s licence and a liquor licence.
The City Family Hotel has a permit for 39 electronic gaming machines.
Patrons lost a total of $3,022,753.82 at the venue in the 2016/17 financial year.
The building has been part of Bendigo’s landscape since 1872 and was designed by one of its best known architects, William Vahland.
Comment was sought from the Sovereign Hotel Group, the stated contact for the business.
