EMERGING Bendigo boxing star Jake May is counting on another golden performance when he steps into the ring in Brisbane this week.
May is chasing gold in the junior 48kg division at the 17th National Open Golden Gloves tournament at Eagles Sports Complex in Brisbane’s south east.
The two-time state champion’s path to the gold has been given an unexpected boost, with only two fighters nominating in the division.
May and his opponent Calob Thomas, from Cairns, will go directly into Friday’s final.
A silver medallist at this year’s national championships in Adelaide, May sharpened up for the tournament by sparring with Australian boxing legend Jeff Fenech’s undefeated protégé Brock Jarvis a fortnight ago.
Nineteen-year-old Jarvis, from Marrickville, scored his 11th professional win last weekend in Melbourne, when he defeated Indonesian Ghalatry Suyono on a big Punches in the Park card, promoted by Bendigo’s Lynden Hosking.
May’s trainer Frank PIanto said Fenech had been impressed with the youngster’s performance against the much-more experienced Jarvis.
He said May would likely have bouts in Brisbane, with ‘challenge bouts’ scheduled on Saturday.
More than 500 boxers will participate in the Golden Gloves event.
