Castlemaine author Trace Balla has won the Children's Book Council of Australia younger readers book of the year award.
Her children’s book, Rockhopping, follows a boy and his uncle on a hiking adventure through the Grampians.
It was released in April 2016, two years after her debut children’s book Rivertime which follow the boy and his bird-watching uncle on a paddling trip along the Glenelg River.
Balla has also had her books Shine (2015) and The Thank you Dish (2017) published.
She moved to Castlemaine from the city to be closer to nature.
“I’m a city girl but I used to spend a lot of time in trees and visiting friends in the (Castlemaine) region,” she said.
“Being in nature is my favourite place. I feel more at ease.”
Dragonfly Song by Wendy Orr and Captain Jimmy Cook Discovers Third Grade by Kate and Jol Temple were also recognised in the younger readers category.
