Former Strathfieldsaye fast bowler Xavier Crone has been awarded a full contract with the Victoria Bushrangers.

After being on a rookie contract last season, Crone’s performances with the Victorian Futures League team and with Carlton in Premier Cricket saw him elevated to a full contract for 2017-18.

Young wicketkeeper Sam Harper and batsman Blake Thomson were also elevated from rookie contract status to full contracts.

Peter Handscomb was named the new captain of the Bushrangers.

Cricket Victoria General Manager of Cricket Shaun Graf said the squad balance was designed to maintain Victoria’s outstanding recent level of success.

“Our ongoing focus has been on developing players ready for Australian selection while also being highly competitive at domestic level. The results clearly show we’re achieving this goal with 13 Victorians representing Australia across all formats in the same period we’ve won three straight Sheffield Shield titles.”
