After an overnight low of 5.9 degrees recorded at 5.24am on Saturday morning, temperatures had crept up to 10.2 degrees by 10.34am.

But the mercury dipped back to just 8.6 degrees by 11am amid a return of squally showers, and still failed to break back through the 10-degree mark by noon despite sunnier conditions.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Rod Dickson said the warmer weather experienced at the start of the week was unlikely to return any time soon.

"We had some spring-like conditions last weekend and early in the week, but that has all been replaced by a strong front and low pressure system moving across the state," he said.

Despite the cool conditions and a low of just 2.2 degrees at Ferny Creek, snowfall tipped for the Dandenong Ranges overnight failed to eventuate.

"It was just a touch too warm for anything widespread; there might have been a bit of sleet around the top of Mt Dandenong," Mr Dickson said.

The bureau has recorded 1.4 millimetres of rain in the city since 9am, on top of 7.2 millimetres in the prior 24 hours.

Mr Dickson said up to 15 millimetres had fallen over the eastern suburbs but only 2-5 millimetres in the west.

He said the wettest weather should be behind the city until Monday.

"There will be an easing of showers across the afternoon and a contraction to the coast," Mr Dickson said.

Flood warnings have been issued for a number of rivers across Victoria including the Kiewa, Ovens, King, Goulburn, Macalister, Mitchell and Glenelg rivers.

A strong wind warning remains current for the East Gippsland coast.

Mr Dickson said a clear night will lead to a cold Sunday morning with temperatures around 4 degrees in the city, dropping to as low as minus 1 in the Yarra Valley.

"We will then see sunny conditions on Sunday and a maximum of 14."

A weak front moving across the state will bring further showers on Monday, keeping temperatures down to a maximum of 12, rising to 15 each day from Tuesday to Thursday ahead of a forecast top of 16 on Friday.
