And Victorians won't be spared Mother Nature's wrath with snow, thunderstorms and rain heading for the state.

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled at Sydney Airport from Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra with the city's train services also in chaos as gusts of than 100km/h wreak havoc on the city's harbour.

Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin have all had to cancel or delay flights to Sydney and Canberra due to strong winds.

Qantas cancelled eight flights before 6.30pm on Friday evening.

A Qantas spokesman said about 40 flights across the network had been affected due to the winds in New South Wales.

"We've cancelled around 40 flights today due to the winds in Sydney, around half of those are Melbourne to Sydney flights," a Qantas spokesman said.

"We'll be watching the weather overnight."

A Virgin spokeswoman said a number of services to and from Sydney had also been disrupted due to the strong winds.

Tigerair has also been hit with delays and cancellations, while a small number of other services across the network had also been affected.

However, the airline did not expect further delays or cancellations for the rest of the weekend.

"We've been in continual contact with (staff at) Sydney airport and they are advising us on how many planes are able to land and take off," she said.

"We have been doing our best to try and accommodate everyone but things are looking like they will be back on track by tommorrow."

Wintry conditions will remain this weekend, with a high chance of rain in Melbourne's southeastern suburbs and a top of 13 degrees.

The alpine regions will get a decent sprinkling, with up to 20 centimetres of snow likely to fall in the next 24 hours.

There will be plenty of the white stuff closer to Melbourne with up to 10 centimetres of snow expected to fall at Mount Macedon and the Grampians.

Snow was also expected to fall on the Dandenong Ranges near Olinda on Friday evening.

And hold onto to your hats, there's a gale warning for the west coast and east Gippsland, while a strong wind warning has been issued for the east Gippsland coast for Friday.

The risk of avalanches in remote parts of the Victorian Alps will also continue at the weekend.???

Emergency Victoria released a warning to snow enthusiasts to only ski or snowboard within resort boundaries and patrolled areas.

"You should avoid undertaking activities such as skiing, snowboarding, hiking or driving in remote back country alpine areas," the statement said.

It also warned there could be black ice and poor visibility on the roads.

All ski resorts remain open but those planning on spending the weekend in the alpine area are urged to continually check ski resort websites for the latest conditions.
