The deputy Nationals leader revealed in the Senate on Thursday night that she believes she is a dual UK citizen, days after party leader and deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce found himself in a similar predicament based on inherited citizenship of New Zealand.
Senator Nash has a Scottish father, giving her automatic citizenship by descent, but said she was previously assured she did not have it.
Like Mr Joyce, Senator Nash says she will not stand down from her frontbench positions while the court considers her case, but has cancelled regional trips as a result of the discovery.
She had been due to visit Bendigo with Bendigo-based senator Bridget McKenzie on Friday and a spokesman for Ms McKenzie said while the trip had been postponed, it was expected it would still go ahead at a later date.
The visit was to have included a tour of the Discovery Centre as part of National Science Week, a meeting with the mayor and a tour of the Chinese Dragon Museum, as well as meetings with other councils in the region.
