The temperature had barely made it to 10 degrees when four brave Bendigo men stripped down to their blue undies to promote prostate cancer awareness.
The men – Neil Macdonald, Des Woodward, Peter Hayes and Brad Hinton – are all survivors of the disease and at 11am on Thursday they were chased through Hargreaves Mall by another pair in blue.
Police officers Leading Senior Constable Todd Deary and Leading Senior Constable Brian Smith were only too happy to help out, following the men with sirens blaring in a Highway Patrol car.
Mr Macdonald said prostate cancer was a big concern in the community with men in rural areas far more likely to get the disease.
“What the whole idea is, is to have guys have an annual health check once every a year,” he said.
“Make it a date – whether to make it the day after the Melbourne Cup, the day after Good Friday.
“Just put it in your mind that this particular date is time for me to go and see the doctors. It’s only a needle in the arm – a blood sample can tell so much about their health.”
The stunt was also to promote the Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch fundraiser, to be held on Friday, November 24.
