Gisborne police members were patrolling near McBean Avenue in Macedon overnight in relation to a series of burglaries when they came across a red Holden with false number plates.
Kyneton Sergeant Peter Law said police members tried to pull the vehicle over but it evaded police.
Sometime later the same members found the car in Owen Street, Woodend, at 5.30am and got out of the police van to investigate.
“At that point the offender has then driven at the police members who had to take evasive action fearing they were going to be struck,” Sergeant Law said.
No members were injured but the police van sustained damage to the front end.
Sergeant Law said police then used force to smash one of the Holden’s windows and OC spray to arrest the sole occupant of the car, a 28-year-old Sunbury man.
The man is currently assisting police with their inquires.
Sergeant Law said it was fortunate no members were injured owing to their training and tactical options used.
“It’s simple, whether you’re an offender or a member of the public, if the police are attempting to intercept you, just pull over,” he said.
“It may save a lot of grief down the track.”
