The ‘end road work’ sign indicated he no longer had to travel along Napier Street at 40km/h.
But it was placed in a school zone – right outside the Holy Rosary Primary School crossing.
“I thought, hang on, it doesn’t make sense,” Mr Pilcher said.
The Bendigo man, who drives about 2000 kilometres a week for work, said he came across conflicting speed zones “all the time” during his travels in Victoria.
“It’s just ridiculous,” he said.
“With the revenue the government is making out of speed cameras, it’s time they put some revenue back into it and started scrutinising some of these private roadworks companies so the signs become more efficient.”
In the time it took him to stop and take a photograph of the mixed messages, Mr Pilcher said he saw drivers coming through the school crossing and re-accelerating, not realising they were still in a restricted speed zone.
“People are being fined all the time because they’re confused,” he said.
VicRoads regional director Mal Kersting said the speed limit signs to end road works were incorrectly placed within a school speed limit zone.
“These signs have now been moved away from the school zone,” he said.
“We apologise for any confusion these signs may have caused road users”.
