The Transport Accident Commission has mapped out 24 scenic locations on the way to and from Victoria’s ski fields as part of its new Breakpoint campaign.
The campaign encourages drivers to plan their trip around taking rest stops when travelling long distances to the mountains.
Road safety manager Samantha Buckis said drowsy driving contributed to about one in four fatalities on the state’s roads.
She said it was important drivers took a break.
“Victoria is a beautiful part of the world so it makes sense to treat the road trip as the first part of your ski holiday by stopping to see the attractions along the way,” she said.
The commission has chosen locations and attractions for drivers to stop at on route to Mount Buller, Mount Hotham, Falls Creek, Mount Baw Baw and Lake Mountain.
“We have chosen these locations to make the road trip more enjoyable and for drivers to have a scenic view to stop at, get out of the car, freshen up and swap drivers if possible,” Ms Buckis said.
Central Victorians heading to the snow can visit the Breakpoint website and TAC Instagram account @TACVictoria ahead of leaving home.
People can discover the already established breakpoints, or identify their own by uploading a photo to Instagram using the hashtag #breakpointvic.
“Breakpoint will help people plan their trips and we’re hoping everyone heading to the snow will see this as a great opportunity to make the drive to the mountains part of the adventure,” Ms Buckis said.
“We’re asking drivers to make a choice not to drive when tired and if they’re feeling drowsy to stop and take in some of the best scenery Victoria has to offer on the way to the mountains.”
Ms Buckis said there were a number of things people could do to ensure a safe road trip.
“Every safe road trip starts with a good night’s sleep the night before and a plan that includes regular breaks on the way to your destination, and on the way home, to stretch the legs or even take a power nap,” she said.
