The 20.12 (132) to 13.12 (90) victory was the Roos’ third for the season and it gave die-hard Flat fans a glimpse of the future.
Kyle Symons (first game), Dylan Barber (first game), Jackson Fry (third game), Kyle Hudson (third game), Jordan Doherty (seventh game), Brodie Fry (eighth game), Liam Ly (10 games) Nathan McHugh (11 games), Liam Collins (12 games) and Lloyd Needs (13 games) are young players the Roos can build around for the future.
McHugh, in particular, looks to have a bright future as a key defender or ruckman and he was one of the Roos’ best on Saturday.
The young Roos set up the win in the first half. They took advantage of the wind in the first quarter, kicking five goals to none. Just as importantly, the Roos kicked five goals against the breeze in the second term to maintain a 29-point lead at half-time.
Maryborough needed to make inroads into the wind in the third term to have any chance of winning, but the Roos sealed the four points by adding five goals to one.
Roos’ midfielder Jon Lanyon probably added more Michelsen Medal votes to his tally with another dominant performance. Small forwards Jack Bower and Mitch Collins kicked 10 goals between them for the Roos.
Midfielder Ethan Crackel was once again Maryborough’s best player. James Macer and Jayden Templeton worked hard, while key forward Cam Rinaldi kicked three goals despite battling a calf injury.
